Wilton woman has kept vision alive to restore rail car diner history in Farmington
FARMINGTON — Rachel Jackson set up a ladder Tuesday and climbed a few steps to unlock the door to the 1950s-style rail car diner. She had it moved to the back edge of her parking lot at her restaurant Farmington D…. on Wilton Road last week.
Jackson of Wilton has a vision. Once she has kept alive for 12 years since she bought the 1950s-style rail car diner, formerly the historic Farmington Diner, for $1 with plans to restore it to its original state.
She also bought a similar, second rail car diner, which is about 16 feet wide and 48 feet long, several years ago in Connecticut. She plans to use pieces from both diners as part of her restoration plan. The second rail car, which is in better structural shape than the original one, is the one she had moved to her restaurant May 28 from a gravel pit in Jay.
Jackson stood in the defunct diner Tuesday looking around. The stools, counters, booths, stainless steel shelving and even some white plates and cups are still there. An L-shaped counter with a glass display case below it, which Jackson believes would have been where the cash register was kept, is also still intact. The kitchen which was an addition to the original rail car diners is no longer there.
With the rail car being on site at the restaurant, she said, she can now work with the Maine Historic Preservation Committee.
Different ideas and options have come up on how the rail car could be incorporated with her restaurant. Maybe it could be attached to the back of the building, or become a malt shop or bakery shop, Jackson said.
She really doesn't want to change the style.
As Jackson contemplates the future of the rail car, she is preparing to reopen her restaurant to the public Wednesday. It has been closed since mid March because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. She plans to set up some outdoor dining, and already has reservations for Thursday and Friday, she said.
One goal for the rail car is to restore part of the town's history. If anyone is interested in helping with ideas, she is willing to listen.
